The launch story of Mahindra Scorpio ‘Intelli-Hybrid’

As India’s first SUV with mild hybrid capability, Scorpio claims many firsts to its name with features such as voice messaging system, the first in its class with a CRDe engine and with a six-speed automatic transmission. And now the Mahindra and Mahindra group has recently announced the introduction of the ‘Intelli-Hybrid’ in the new Mahindra Scorpio at the ex-showroom, Mumbai. The new Intelli-hybrid replaces Mahindra’s Micro-hybrid system (basically an auto start stop feature), and is now available in all grades of the Scorpio equipped with the 2.2L mHawk engine (S4, S4+, S4+ 4WD, S6+, S8, S10-2WD and S10-4WD). The new technology also offers brake-energy regeneration and assistance under acceleration in addition to the start/ stop system, already available in the Scorpio range. The technology works in a similar fashion to Maruti Suzuki's SHVS system and employs a larger battery than usual. While, Mahindra claims that the recent technology will result in lower fuel-consumption by upto 7%.

With this new innovation, Mahindra has not only gained on the fuel front but also  has taken advantage of the tax incentives offered by the NEMMP (National Electric Mobility Mission Plan), as reflected by its competitive pricing. As mild-hybrid diesel-powered vehicles are exempted from NGT’s crackdown, the Intelli-Hybrid system is likely to make the Mahindra Scorpio more appealing.

Specifications

Apart from the inclusion of the new mini Hybrid system, the Scorpio remains unchanged. This means that it continues to be powered by a 2.2-litre Turbo-Diesel engine that can be ordered with either a manual or an automatic transmission. The ‘intelli hybrid’ comes with a 2179 cc, turbocharged, 4-cylinder diesel engine with the maximum power of 120 Bhp and maximum torque 280Nm with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The certified mileage goes upto 16.2 kmpl and the fuel tank has the capacity to fill upto 60 litres.

Mileage

Since, Mahindra claims that new Scorpio Intelli Hybrid is as much as 7% more fuel efficient than the regular model, the new system will offer slightly higher fuel mileage than the regular 2.2-litre variant. If the the estimated mileage figures are to be calculated then they maybe-
