Road Safety: Need For Stricter Rules And Penalties

It is of no surprise that the number of deaths that occur due to road accidents are alarmingly high. Recently, the CEO of Niti Aayog, Amitabh Kant openly made a statement in which he advised to imply a heavy penalty on the ones who violate traffic rules. He pointed out that the number of people who lose their lives in crashes on road is as big as one lakh fifty thousand. It is an area of huge concern and needs to be brought under control as soon as possible.

As was quoted by him,"In order to control road accidents, we need to eliminate all the black spots in the highways of the country. Also, there is need to have strict rules & penalties in the transport sector. Moreover, City Mayor should be named and shamed for high accidents and bad roads". he seems to be very concerned and aware about the situation. In a survey, our country pessimistically qualified to be the one with the highest number of road accidents, conducted by International Road Federation. A commoner of the country gets the access to the driving license pretty easily, even if he or she hasn't given the exam and followed the procedure properly.

The traffic rules are also recklessly broken all over the country and bribing is a major issue as well. Amitabh speculated a good solution to be a medical assistance provision post casualty at lesser distances from the running roads and an active use of Geographical Information System to track and record when and where accidents take place so as to reach out for aid quickly. An insight to the emergency services, road cleanliness, connectivity, road infrastructure, provisions for differently-abled drivers, road quality and pollution control, all that is related or is the cause of road accidents should be taken care of so as to reduce fatal accidents.
