In order to make the National Highways of our country able to dispatch a smooth road trip, especially for heavy commercial vehicles, the govt. has decided to make them free of U-turns and side entries up till 20 thousand kms. There won't be any frequent cuts on the medians or risky diversions so as to provide a smooth straight road locomotion for vehicles so as to practice high speed with safety. Also, the movement of stray animals shall be barricaded from these roads.

The road transportation ministry is also planning to introduce a four-lane division under the Bharatmala scheme so as to divide the traffic and ensure the safe and smooth flow of the vehicles of the same type. It will cost around  Rs 3.85 lakh crore. to execute the plan. But it will make the traverse much safer. At present all the vehicles ranging from cycles to heavy trucks run together on the roads, thus, increasing the chances of bumping into each other and causing a fatal accident. By road divisions, the risk of collision shall be reduced phenomenally. According to Highway ministry, while a four-lane road in Japan can carry up to 40,000 vehicles/day, similar stretches in India need to be expanded to six lanes requiring land acquisition and high investment.

The Nitin Gadkari ministry is also looking forward to introducing the concept of 'access controlled' national highways in our country. it would demarcate the service roads used to reach main highway roads, rather than now existing road architecture under which all the roads are used to connect to the highway and all the offices and establishments are present there. Access control will limit the entry and exit on these roads to a certain designated point.

About 80% of vehicles on these roads move goods from one place to another via these routes. Gadkari is also looking forward to introducing high-capacity trucks to increase the volume movement across the major cities. The plan was proposed during Atal Bihari Vajpayee govt. and is looking forward for the nod of various ministries, after it has being confirmed by the Prime Minister's office.
