The next level power generation in EVs- Sodium-Ion batteries

The time when there is a launch of an electric car almost every day and when everyday upgradations and innovation are making the electric vehicle dream come true, even EVs are upgrading now.

All the electric vehicles, till date have been back up with Lithium-Ion battery which has till now served its purpose very well. With the capacity of going up to 500kms in a single charge these batteries are doing, pretty much a good job. But as it is said, more is less!

If we look at the parts of an electric vehicle, the battery, which is the main power source, comes out to be the most expensive component of the car. That increases the price of the EVs making it less affordable for the people.

The researchers are now working on another source of energy that will cost 80% less than the present-day batteries. These batteries will give the same charge as compared to the Lithium-Ion batteries.

Researchers also say that although the charging cycles have been optimized already in terms of a comparison to the Li-On batteries, the volumetric energy density that is needed to hold a similar charge is yet to be perfected to make it viable to fit inside an automobile.

The major concern of the researchers is the area used by these Sodium-Ion batteries to produce the same output.

Although, there have been no plan to commercialize this concept, however if this happens and goes as planned, these batteries will help in bringing down the prices of the electric cars, thereby making them more affordable.
