MG Motors buys land worth 1500 Cr in Gurgaon

National Capital Region is becoming a hub for auto makers, six of them having shifted to the  NCR or set up base there over the past two years.

The new entrant is MG Motor India, the wholly owned subsidiary of Chinese giant SAIC which is set to invest Rs 150 crore to procure commercial space in Gurgaon.

“To further reinforce our commitment to India, we are in the process of out rightly buying some 60,000 square feet of commercial space in Gurgaon to set up our corporate office and also to establish a flagship store at the ground floor of the same building to showcase our products, investing a sizeable amount of money,” said Rajeev Chaba, president and managing director of MG Motor India.

A brand store - set up at the same location - will permanently have on display a Morris Garages classic car at the forefront of the dealership, reminiscent of the showrooms in London. The brand store will also have other elements like MG memorabilia and merchandise for sale to customers.

“The benefits of having an office in Gurgaon as opposed to any other location are proximity to airport and central government offices. On top of that, 25% of the country’s car sales come from Delhi-NCR, so it also benefits our brand centre where we would like to attract youngsters to check out the digital experience at our flagship showroom,” Chaba added.

The land acquired by MG Motor India is the second big-ticket real estate deal by an auto company in the recent past. South Korean auto major Hyundai Motor had purchased about 7,800 square meters of space for Rs 205.88 crore to set up its new corporate office in Gurgaon in 2016. Compatriot Kia Motors India recently moved to a permanent location on Golf Course Road. Renault, Nissan and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India are among those that have shifted corporate base to Gurgaon over the past two years.
