General Motors Signed 3-Yr Wage Contract With Workers

General Motors based in India has recently signed a 3-year long agreement with the workers at the Talegaon plant in Maharashtra. It has set up the wages at Rs. 22 thousand on an average. It shall come into effect from 1st April'17 and go on till 2020 benefitting a total of 25 thousand workers at the plant.

"As per the new agreement, the workers will receive 80 percent of the increased component in the first year followed by 10 percent each in the remaining two years, respectively," GM India said in a statement. The company has decided to completely shut the production at the precious Halol plant in Gujarat and switch to the new Talegaon plant for the overall production, though it is likely to shift certain production units from the Halol plant to Talegaon plant.

In 2015, the company announced the investment of sky high 1 billion dollars so as to set up a proliferating market in India. Now the company is on that path, though it is careful to invest in the right direction for which it has put the investment on certain models on hold, just to read the Indian market's statistics properly and then make the move.

Cyril George, HR Director, Talegaon, said: “The signing of the new agreement is a testimony of our commitment towards the workers and their welfare. We have been able to seal the settlement keeping in mind the competitive wage structure and benefits for the workers at the Talegaon facility.”
