Delhi High Court to De-register Diesel cars older than a Decade

The NGT has started to take stricter actions on reducing the vehicular pollution. It was 2 years ago when NGT decided to ban all the petrol & diesel vehicles that were more than 15 years old, from the national capital. The order did attract a lot of fury from the vintage car owners and other masses. However, the NGT did succeed in implementing the ban.

However, in the second course of the issue, when the authorities have become highly sensitive to the vehicular emissions, the NGT has now decided to ban all the diesel vehicles, whether commercial or private, that are more than a decade ago. This also applies to all the imported cars that run on diesel. The authorities have indeed decided to leave no stones unturned.

Following the order that was passed on the 15th April last year, the NGT has also ordered the RTO to deregister all the vehicles that fall in this category immediately.

Sticking to its abrupt orders, the RTOs have now started to a

de-register the vehicles that fall in the 10-year-old category.

NGT implemented this decision without any warnings, leaving the masses without any solution to it. The NGT has also not provided any solutions to deal with these de-registered cars and considering the fact that a formal scrappage scheme is not on the cards in the near future, there will be a growing number of cars that will be parked (illegally) on the streets of Delhi/NCR that cannot be officially used on the road.

The only way out of this vicious circle is selling these vehicles out of the state. But getting a No Objection Certificate(NOc) looks like a far cry.The government must also ensure a more mass market push towards real hybrid vehicles and electrification with an impetus towards building an ecosystem to support future electric mobility solutions.
