At the recent Smart Hackathon 2017,Nitin Gadkari, Union Road Transport Minister claimed that around 30% of the driving licence in the country are fraudulent. In this respect, the government had recently made it compulsory for applicants to provide their Aadhaar card details while filing for a new one or renewing their existing licence. By doing so, they would be able to track the authenticity of the identity details provided by the applicants. This would also rule out the situation of issuing multiple licenses over single identity as every individual has registered unique ID on their Aadhaar cards.

The government has also set up a centralised database for recording the licenses issued in the country. This will also save multiple copying of the already issued licenses and hence, no sham licenses would be possible. The move would make the procedure much more genuine and transparent. It would also decrease the corruption practiced in transport business and car thefts.

The same situation was recorded by Nitin Gadkari in June 2015 as well when a new Motor Vehicles Act was launched to curb the situation. But relying on computcomputer-basedseemed to fail the Act as most of it was replaced internally. Thus, if the step is to be made fruitful this time, it needs to be implied right from the grass root level of the system. The license has to be made without corruption and the officials should conduct the driving tests and provision of license should only be to the genuine holders.
