Swedish SAAB’s “Make in India”, a Check or a CHECKMATE for the Country?

SAAB invades India with defence missiles and not cars this time.

Sweden-based aerospace and defence manufacturers, SAAB group, have decided to open a JOINT VENTURE with the defence arm of KALYANI GROUP (KSSL).

This new joint venture, set up by SAAB and the KSSL, will produce the SRSAM (short range surface-to-airmissile) and VSHORAD (very short range air defence systems) air defence programmes.

SAAB, world’s leading supplier of missiles already, want to make Indian products for

India- in India. “Later the government may decide on what they want”, says HAKAM BUSHKHE, CEO, SAAB

BUSHKHE also brushes aside the recent decision of India to settle for Dassault’s Rafale fighter jets instead of SAAB’s Gripen by

saying”That’s business, some you lose and some you win”.

“The JV firm will combine Saab’s knowledge and experience as a developer and supplier of high-technology radar and

missile systems, with theengineering excellence and manufacturing capabilities of the Kalyani Group.

“The JV will create a global supplier in the area of Ground BasedAir Defence Systems based in India,” noted Amit Kalyani, Executive Director at Kalyani Group, in the statement.

Has SAAB made a smart move?
