Vice President of India discourages owning more cars

The vice president of India, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu has been in news withy the issue of the increasing number of automobiles in India and the worsening parking scenario in the country.

He highly discouraged the ownership of more cars by the Indian families, appreciated the step of ensuring a parking space before getting the vehicles registered especially in the major metro cities and regulating the tight parking situations by hiking the parking fees.

With the increase in the pollution levels, Naidu also wanted people to adapt to electric cars and shift to cleaner fuels so as to maintain a sustainable development in the country. Scraping of old polluting vehicles have also to be practiced and strengthening mass transportation is what is required.

Also, the recent rule of ensuring an availability of the parking space before getting your vehicles registered is also encourages by the vice president.

During the conference that took place in Hyderabad, Naidu also said that there has been a unfortunate trend of owning more number of cars even in the small families. This has not only increased the pollution levels but has lead to an increase in the road congestions too. This issue is serious and thus has to be looked upon as soon as possible.

"A holistic and integrated approach to urban land use and transport planning and investment is needed if urban areas are to become socially, environmentally and economically sustainable," he said.


Naidu also stressed the need for ensuring last mile connectivity, integration between various modes of transport, integration of land use and transport planning, Transit Oriented Development (TOD), innovative financing and land value capture, and public private partnership.
