Maruti Study shows that only 25% drivers use seat-belt while driving

The number of deaths due to road accidents in India has increased over a period. Earlier in 2016, India had seen a total of 4,80,652 road accidents. Nearly 1,50,785 persons were killed in 2016 and the reason is - road accidents.

Despite of the continuous efforts by the stakeholders, that is, both the automakers and the government, safety measures in India have been nil. And the blame goes to the drivers itself.

A recent study by Maruti says that only a 25% of all the drivers use seat belts while driving in India. This study was conducted in about 17 cities across the country.

Another interesting angle to this study is that the results tell that the number of people adopting seat belts also depends on how strong is the legal enforcement of rules and regulations in the city. Thus, a 32% of the people say that they don't wear a seatbelt while driving because the law in their city is not strict with the safety rule.

Other reasons are astonishing too. 27% people said that wearing a seatbelt astonishes their image and 25% say that wearing a seatbelt would spoil their ironed clothes. And a good 23% don't see the seat belts as a safety gear. However, their family and peers who don’t wear a seatbelt while driving influence a good 20%.

The country has seen the highest number of road accidents deaths in the world out of which non-seatbelt accidents account to about 5,638. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), seat belts can reduce the risk of fatality by 45-60 percent in the event of an accident.
